Unst Day Tour

“The Top of Britain”

Usually runs Tuesdays and Saturdays

We arrive on Unst after two ferry trips and having taken in a wealth of wildlife enroute. We then travel to the “Top of Britain” and after a short walk on the hillside we enjoy breathtaking views of the world famous Muckle Flugga light house. This taking place as we watch in splendour at being surrounded by breeding Great Skuas (Bonxies). If it is a clear day we may be able to see the tip of North Mainland to the south at this panoramic site.

Onwards we take time to explore Skaw and Lamba Ness, the former boasting a beautiful secluded beach with the backdrop of Britain’s most northerly house. Lamba Ness is the most easterly point of Unst and if the weather conditions allow we will spend time on a cetacean watch.

In the afternoon we spend time exploring the Keen of Hamar National Nature Reserve, one of the UK’s most remarkable botanical sites, where the moon-like landscape of serpentine rock, collection of Arctic Alpines and an endemic plant, Edmonston’s Chickweed (found nowhere else in the world), make this a firm favourite. We shall also take time search for species such as Frog Orchid, Moonwort, Norwegian Sandwort, and Northern Rock Cress and others.

We will also spend time searching for some of the scarce moorland breeding birds like Red-throated Diver, Whimbrel, Golden Plover, and Arctic Skua, and keep an eye out for Otters and Common and Grey Seals along the shores.

We depart from Lerwick at 08:00 or a convenient location and after two ferry crossings and an hour on the road we arrive on Unst mid-morning. We leave Unst in the late afternoon to arrive back in Lerwick between 17:00 and 18:00.
