Shetland Nature Lodge

What better way to offer our guests a unique and authentic Shetland experience than to be based at this idyllically situated, beautifully designed and secluded property, right at the northern end of Unst. Britain’s most northerly accommodation property, you can enjoy unhindered balcony views overlooking Hermaness National Nature Reserve and a breathtaking vista of Burrafirth beach. The Shetland Nature Lodge is available year round for self-catering or for use with our tailored itineraries.

We are the only tour company in Shetland to run an accommodation property for our guests and are really proud to add this holiday option to our unique program. The breathtaking location and stunning design ensure this venue is totally unique. Throughout the interior we have authentically themed the lodge with images and art work of Shetlands natural environment to create the perfect atmosphere for our guests. In addition there is small inspiring library for naturalists, photographers and birders.

With nothing to distract from the blissful tranquility but the breathtaking view and the unhindered wildlife within it, the Shetland Nature Lodge offers the perfect base for an authentic Shetland nature retreat…

  • Shetland Nature Just for you – exclusively tailored itineraries for couples, small groups and families.
  • Wild Shetland images – bespoke or small group photography workshops with one to one Otter Photography, exclusive bird hides and innovative off the beaten track itineraries.
  • Birding in Shetland – tailored itineraries for spring and autumn migration holidays at your own pace; for dawn to dusk rarity hunters or relaxed itineraries enjoying the sheer wonder of bird migration in the islands.
  • Self-catering – the lodge is also available for self-catering year round.

About the location

View from the balcony over Burrafirth.

View from the balcony over Burrafirth.

Situated right at the northern end of Unst, at Buddabreak in Burrafirth, it is the last property at the end of a secluded side road with the only neighboring house being a few hundred yards away.

The property offers unhindered views over the beautiful bay of Burrafirth and its stunning sand beach and beyond to Hermaness National Nature Reserve to the west and to the north the bay opens out to where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet.

From the surrounding moorland the evocative calls of iconic Shetland specialties such as Great and Arctic Skua and Red-throated Diver can be heard along with the symphony of song of Curlew, Golden Plover and Skylark to name but a few. In the bay squadrons of Gannets plunge dive into the clear waters where fellow seabirds such as Puffins, Razorbills, Black and Common Guillemots can be seen from the sofa or enjoyed from the balcony!

A little bit about ‘Noosthamar’- The Shetland Nature Lodge

Originally this property was a traditional ‘Shetland croft house’ and is known locally as ‘Noosthamar’, but with its brand new modernly designed extension and high standard of interior the Lodge now offers an impressive combination of comforts, character and modern convenience. The Lodge is furnished to a high standard with Wi Fi, Free view TV and even a booster for Vodafone mobile coverage.

The layout and room specifications

With four bedrooms (all in the original building), comprising of one en suite ¾ and a master downstairs and upstairs two ‘attic bedrooms’; one twin and one double, it can sleep up to eight guests at full capacity.

In the brand new extension of the property there is a spacious and modernly designed split level and open plan living room, dining area and kitchen with floor to ceiling bay windows and French doors onto the balcony. There is also a second living room and utility room and bathroom facility with bath/shower.

Although it can potentially sleep up to eight guests, the property is perhaps better suited to smaller groups, such as these dynamics:

a) Four rooms with single occupancy
b) Two couples
c) Perfect base for families
